As a paying member of the NARAS (National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences) I am embarrassed and appalled by the decision of the recording academy to allow Chris Brown to not only perform at the 54th Annual GRAMMY awards, but highlighting him in multiple performances throughout the evening.

The past 12 months have been particularly disappointing and caused me to regret my membership in the decision to eliminate various Latin music categories from the GRAMMY awards, which were not even televised prior to elimination. These awards were eliminated for reasons which I believe were financial, however the televised set and stage for the televised GRAMMYs was far more elaborate than in prior years.

I urge The Recording Academy to take an active stance against physical abuse, and for survivors of said abuse, specifically, Rihanna, a six time GRAMMY award winner. Why is it so crucial that the GRAMMYs highlight the music and performances of Chris Brown, who has only earned one GRAMMY award, and has accomplished, in my opinion, nothing remarkable or unique as a performer or recording artist? NARAS is a widely recognized organization which lobbies and actively works for my rights as a musician. I would like to see this same organisation work, and lobby for the rights of my fellow music professionals who have suffered abuse by the actions of a lover, and the rights of people of any profession who have suffered any form of abuse by a lover.
